Rohde & Schwarz, EID to Supply Portuguese Army With Software-Defined Radios

Rohde & Schwarz and technology developer EID have partnered to supply handheld software-defined radios (SDRs) for the Portuguese Army.

SDR bases bandwidth, modulation, frequency and network access on software to improve radio signal processing.

The collaboration will see the delivery of Radio stations SOVERON HR selected as part of the Dismounted Soldier Communication System for the Portuguese Armed Forces.

EID will also provide the Army with its indigenously developed and manufactured in Portugal dismounted soldier system solution.

“We are very proud to develop and deliver this capability to the Portuguese Army by having such a great partner on our side,” EID Managing Director Frederico Lemos said.

“With successful joint projects in the past, both in Portugal and internationally, we form the best team in equipping the Portuguese Army with this state-of-the-art system for soldiers.”

The SOVERON HR is expected to support downed soldiers in a variety of scenarios, according to Rohde & Schwarz.

The mobile radio can also work with the company one SOVERON VR car radio to ensure seamless connectivity on the battlefield.

“In collaboration with EID and our long-term relationship to equip the Portuguese Defense Forces, we will provide a sovereign in-country capability to support the Portuguese Army throughout the life of their communications systems and upgrade existing equipment to the latest standard,” Rohde & Vice President of Schwarz tactical communications Alexander Philip said.

Dismantled soldier system in the Portuguese army

In 2021, the Portuguese army assigned EID an 8.5 million euro ($8.3 million) contract to supply its dismounted soldier system to the infantry forces.

The EID Dismounted Soldier Communication System includes voice and data communication equipment such as handheld radios, data terminals, and a dismounted soldier integrator that are compatible with other external sensors worn by troops. The company will deliver the order from 2022 to 2026.
