Finnish Military to Receive Additional Handheld, Vehicular Radios

The Finnish Defense Forces have assigned tactical communications company Bittium Wireless contract to provide additional handheld and vehicle radios.

The €5.3 million ($5.5 million) deal will see the company supply its Bittium Tough software-defined radios (SDRs) and related equipment.

Bittium radios feature programmable software technology and waveforms that can be upgraded throughout the device’s life cycle.

According to the Finnish army, the order is part of the gradual replacement of the defense forces’ outdated analogue field radios.

The first batch of new radios is scheduled for delivery by the end of this year.

“The order will support the continued national development of SDR technology and the installation of the radios as part of the Army’s M18 C5 system and the Finnish Defense Forces’ family of radio equipment,” said Finnish Army Signals Inspector Col. Anti Tunkkari explain.

“The order also ensures the advancement of field radio development, usability and adaptability across all services and facilities under Defense Command.”

Connecting the Finnish military branches

The contract follows a Framework Agreement signed by the then Minister of Defense of Finland Jussi Ninisteau in 2018, which ordered several tranches of communications capabilities for all three Finnish military branches.

Valued at €8.3 million ($8.7 million), the contract will provide Bittium to the Finnish Defense Forces with Voice over Internet Protocol phones, routers and single-pair high-speed digital subscriber line repeater capabilities. The terminals are based on Bittium’s tactical wireless internet protocol network, which enables broadband tactical communication and is currently in service with the Finnish forces.

The capabilities offer a variety of third-party connectivity and equipment options for the military to integrate future systems and legacy battle network radios.
