MUNICH. Rohde & Schwarz’s SOVERON software-defined on-board radio has been selected by Saab for integration into the Saab Gripen E/F fighter for several export countries.

On-board transceivers from Rohde & Schwarz – the only global supplier of military in-flight radios that meet the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) civil aviation certification requirements – use such standard communication algorithms as the SATURN Fast Frequency Hopping technique (Second Generation tactical UHF anti-jamming radio for NATO) plus, as well as optional embedded NATO cryptology. On the same subject : Leonardo’s airborne software-defined radio selected by Boeing to equip NATO’s AWACS fleet. Rohde & Schwarz says the special versions are certified by SECAN and BSI to enable secure communications up to NATO SECRET.

Company officials say the transceivers can perform mission-critical functions by performing software downloads, thereby ensuring Gripen can be used in international airspace under network warfare conditions.
