Kepler Communications has added Spire Global as a customer for its high-capacity Ku-band data transmission service, the companies announced Tuesday.
Under the terms of the contract, Spire will install Kepler’s physical Ku-band payloads on three initial satellites. Kepler said its Ku-band terminals will enable Spire satellites to send large amounts of data back to Earth using Kepler’s regulatory licenses. The first Spire satellites with Kepler’s Ku-band service will be launched in early 2023, and the contract includes the option to scale up to 50 satellites.
Kepler’s software-defined radio payload has flown on 19 satellites and has delivered an information rate of more than 300 Mbit/s from low-Earth orbit on a 3.4-meter dish and 240 Mbit/s on a Kymeta flat-panel antenna. Kepler is developing an updated path to support 2.5 Gbps.
“We are excited to offer a high data rate solution that gives our customers the ability to deliver significantly larger amounts of data from their on-orbit assets,” said Diane Burchett, Kepler’s vice president of engineering. “Spire Global is well positioned to be the primary customer of the service and we see many synergies between our offerings and the value Spire creates for its customers.”
According to Spire, this service will enable larger bulk data downloads for Space Services customers who have more sophisticated data requirements.
“Kepler is developing a novel solution with its technology to increase data speed,” said Joel Spark, Vice President of Space Services at Spire. “This collaboration is a step forward in building the Internet in space. We look forward to using the Kepler network to accelerate data download capacity and provide our space services customers with the most technologically advanced capabilities.”
This deal follows Spire agreeing to host a Kepler Communications test of its space communications network on a Spire satellite in late 2021.
