Press release, Madrid, 10 March 2021: Thales successfully conducted various trials that demonstrated the ability to integrate its radio communication solutions with Army command and control systems for command network use cases, both at the brigade level and at lower echelons. Trials of SYNAPS software-defined radios (SDR) and line-of-sight solutions have shown full compatibility and new capabilities introduced in command and control and communications systems deployed and in use, such as BMS (Battlefield Management System) and PR4G radios, or will be in near future from the army.

These trials took place as part of FORCE 2035 of the Spanish Army [FUERZA 2035] Experiment plan providing simultaneous support of multimedia services in video, voice and other data. They were carried out under the direction, coordination and supervision of the Technical Assistance for Information and Telecommunication Systems of the Spanish Army (JCISAT) and with the presence as observers of personnel from the Academy of Engineering of the Land Forces (ACING), the National Cryptologic Center (CCN) and the General Directorate for weapons and materiel (DGAM).

To accomplish this, Thales’ Spanish teams have used a variety of communication solutions and systems to meet current and future command capability needs. The technology presented during the experiment covered various solutions for military radio communications: SDR (Software Defined Radio) SYNAPS Dual Channel/Dual Band Radio (VHF/UHF) and the TN4110 module offering line-of-sight capability and demonstrating our ability to operate in a wide frequency band in motion.

The trials demonstrated the capabilities of the SYNAPS radios with the current VHF GEOMUX waveform implemented in PR4G, as well as with the ESSOR European protected software radio HDR WF (High Data Rate Waveform), a UHF waveform provided by the ESSOR program to which Spain participates. it is now funded by 6 European countries. The trials confirmed the high data capacity of the ESSOR HDR WF and its full adaptability to Spanish operational requirements, while ensuring full interoperability with the 6 European countries that developed it. The ESSOR waveform will soon be further funded by the ESSOR countries and the European Defense Funds for the upcoming phase of the program as the new capacity is reached.

Interoperability with the PR4G radios used in the military was also demonstrated as were the new voice group capabilities, which lead to significant savings in both the number of radios in vehicles and frequencies. SYNAPS radios offer much more efficient management of the electromagnetic spectrum, enabling high network density and optimal capacity/reach ratio with very robust ECCM (Electronic Countermeasures).
