Software Defined Radio another addition under Aatmanirbhar Bharat for Indian Army

The Indian Army is in the process of revamping its communication systems by procuring Multi/Ultra High Frequency (V/UHF) Software Defined Radio (SDR) systems from the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan.

Modern Combat Net Radio (CNR) equipment, which remains the backbone of battlefield communications for the Indian Army, supports only voice communication and has limited or no data transmission capability.

To arm soldiers with the advantages offered by the technology and equip them to wage war in the Net-Centric battlespace, the current radios will soon be replaced with indigenously developed Software Defined Radio (SDR).

The latest technology will have improved data transmission capability, improved voice clarity and data transmission accuracy in spectrally noisy environments. It will also support multiple waveforms, have greater system security and better communication robustness in clear and secure mode to meet the operational requirements of the Indian Army.

The Ministry of Defense said that after successful evaluation of supplier responses, a Project Sanction Order (PSO) has already been issued to 18 Indian suppliers to begin prototype development. The contract will be concluded with one of the companies after the successful development of the prototype.

The Ministry believes that the development of V/UHF Manpack SDR under Make-II will be a game changer for the Indian Army. It is also in sync with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat policy which will lead to self-reliance in advanced communication systems.
