Rohde & Schwarz HF Technology to Upgrade Australia’s Strategic Military Comms

Rohde & Schwarz will supply its latest high-power, liquid-cooled high-frequency (HF) transmitters and software-defined radio (SDR) technology for the Australian JP9101 Enhanced Defence High Frequency Communications System (EDHFCS) program. This will provide Australian and allied armed forces with the ability to securely communicate using voice and data from almost any location across the globe. R&S SK4110 HF high-power transmitters minimize thermal load on all components with a self-sufficient liquid-cooling system, enabling a longer service life and lower failure rates.

Offering a sustainable carbon footprint along with up to 50% energy cost savings, the transmitters feature critical module redundancy for uninterruptible transmission and operation in case of power-supply failure or HF output-stage failure. This addresses the requirement for advanced long-range, beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) communications with very high data rates and maximum reliability, reaching levels of reliability and operational resilience previously not seen.

Rohde & Schwarz has been operating successfully in the Australian and New Zealand region for more than 40 years, and its Australian subsidiary in Sydney currently services defense communications contracts and air-traffic-control communications contracts in both New Zealand and Australia. The company was selected to provide HF radios and high-power amplifiers with HF wideband capability to the New Zealand Defence Force in 2020Members of the SOVERON radio family, the R&S M3SR Series 4100 HF radios are versatile SDRs that include HF wideband functionality, and they can be extended at any time.
