Engineering firm BlueHalo acquires Maryland-based company

Nov. 30 — Virginia-based engineering firm BlueHalo, which has a presence in New Mexico, recently announced that it has acquired Ipsolon Research, a company that designs software-defined radio technologies.

BlueHalo says the acquisition of Ipsolon – which already has its SDRs implemented in some of the company’s products – complements current strategic and technology initiatives and will enable faster timelines for rapid prototyping and product delivery. The acquisition price was not disclosed.

“As SDRs continue to become increasingly critical and ubiquitous in the development of next-generation technologies across BlueHalo’s product portfolio, Ipsolon stood out as an ideal fit to further accelerate our mission and create efficiencies for our customers, providing rapid capabilities and facilitate increased creativity by having in-house SDR capabilities,” said Jonathan Moneymaker, CEO of BlueHalo, in a statement. “We are extremely excited to bring Ipsolon to BlueHalo and provide an integrated and superior set of solution offerings to our customers as we strive to continue to innovate at mission speed.”

Ipsolon, founded in 2018 and based in Maryland, designs its SDRs for use in mission-critical spaces constrained by harsh environments. Its flagship products include Cerberus, an SDR built for both land and air travel, and Chameleon, which provides multi-antenna capabilities, designed for a variety of applications in military applications.

BlueHalo expanded into a 73,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the Sandia Science and Technology Park that was previously occupied by Raytheon Technologies last year, where the company makes phased array antennas. It occupies more than 200,000 square feet of space in Albuquerque.

In a statement, John Shanton, CEO and founder of Ipsolon, said the company is “incredibly excited to partner with BlueHalo as we continue to deliver innovative solutions to our customers.”

“Joining BlueHalo will allow us to provide an expanded set of capabilities and resources to both new and existing customers as we focus on achieving even greater mission impact,” Shanton said. “We are excited to continue pushing the boundaries and bringing critical SDR technology and capabilities to the warfighter with BlueHalo.”
