DUNJIN, May 25 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s largest eco-friendly aqua farm, which uses hot wastewater from a thermal power plant, has opened in Danjin, South Chungcheong Province.

Local aqua farm operator Dangjin Farmers began operations on Monday after completing a smart aqua farm that uses hot wastewater from a coal-fired power plant run by Korea East-West Power Corp.

The smart aqua farm uses a huge amount of hot wastewater that has previously been dumped into the sea.

Representatives of the company said that by using hot wastewater it would be possible to maintain an aqua farm even in the middle of winter with a small amount of energy, which should have a significant cost-saving effect.

Aquapharm has also created an intelligent system based on the Internet of Things (IoT), which allows real-time monitoring and remote control of water temperatures and salinity levels.

The system can reduce labor intensity to approximately 20% of that required for general aqua farms.

Currently, the intelligent aqua farm breeds 3 million white-legged shrimp, with an annual production target of 125 tons.
