Parliament’s role in probing Kennedy Agyapong’s threats of assault against Erastus Asare Donkor crucial – Osei Owusu
Parliamentary Privilege Committee Chairman Joseph Osey Ovusu says parliament has an important role to play in investigating Asin’s central MP, Kennedy Agyapong’s threats to defeat Luv FM journalist Erastus Assare Doncor.
Mr Osei Owusu said that Parliament had an important role to play in the Committee’s performance.
In an interview with JoyNews, he said the Privileges Committee could make recommendations, but accepting or rejecting them depended on members of parliament.
“The parliamentary committee is only a committee of Parliament, you make recommendations to the House, so that, according to Parliament’s rules, any recommendations that are admissible under the rules can be made by the committee, but whether or not the House accepts the recommendations depends on The Chamber, “he explained.
He added that “there is a Parliament Act that regulates what kind of punishment can be enforced if a member is accused of contempt or abuse of privilege, so the law will determine what we do.”
Parliament’s Privileges Committee will meet on Monday to decide on the terms of the neglect case against Asin Central Council MP Kennedy Agyapong for threatening to beat Luv FM journalist Erastus Assare Doncor.
Mr Agyapong was filmed on Friday, July 9, on a live program that was widely posted on social media, saying that “if he [Mr Agyapong] if he were president, he would ensure that Erastus Asare Doncor would be beaten mercilessly. “
On July 14, President Alban Bagbin referred him to Parliament’s Privileges Committee to incite attacks on Erastus.
The directive issued by the President is to enable the Chamber to decide whether Mr Agyapong’s actions are in breach of Parliament’s orders and, if so, to recommend appropriate sanctions.
