We recently added two of Sony’s new BVM-HX310 31-inch 4K HDR main monitors to complement our existing BVM-X300 30-inch 4K / HDR OLED reference monitors. The new HX310 works with the X300 in critical monitoring, control and quality control situations and enhances Elite’s HDR capabilities by offering support for a wider color gamut and providing up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness at 1,000,000: 1. In addition, the HX310 can be combined with the colors of current X300 monitors for accurate color reproduction throughout the facility.
In addition, the recently released PVM-X series (PVM-X2400 24-inch and PVM-X1800 18.4-inch) from 4K HDR monitors matches the BVM-HX310 TRI-MASTER HX main monitor, so when we’re ready to consider another monitor, we will have an option that seamlessly integrates with our existing workflow.
ADJUSTING OUR BENCHMARK
Elite evaluates the picture quality, stability and flexibility of the HX310, supporting multiple formats and results. We use BVM-HX310 for HDR, SDR 4K, UHD, 2K and HD color grading, as well as quality control and recovery. What stood out with the BVM-HX310 was the superb image quality of the monitor, accurate and stable color reproduction plus the quad connection, which allows us to easily target 4K / UHD content to any bay in the facility, in addition to the different color spaces. Another highlight is the monitor presets, which allow you to configure multiple monitoring situations – offering the ability to quickly switch between HDR and SDR without having to go through the menus. The ability to create multiple presets makes us faster and easier to create, integrate and switch standards, color spaces and resolutions at the touch of a button.
QUALITY OF DISTRIBUTION
From the point of view of mastering QC, Sony’s displays show certain elements that we don’t necessarily have an idea of past displays. In terms of quality and precision, we are able to identify problems with greater ease, which is beneficial to our customers.
The response to the Elite HX310 monitors was unanimous – operators’ customers all noticed the exceptional image quality and dynamic color gamut. The monitors also offer a great aperture that clearly and accurately helps in finding problems and artifacts related to the pixels, especially when mastering shows. They offer us an accurate experience that reflects what the user would see.
