Barrett Communications continues to deliver emergency communications to Vanuatu

Barrett Communications recently supplied high frequency (HF) radio communications equipment for the first phase of an inter-island project under the Defense Cooperation Program between Vanuatu and Australia. This equipment will be used to upgrade an existing Barrett HF system that is almost 20 years old.

The new equipment delivered is a Barrett 4050 HF Software Defined Radio (SDR) and will support and enhance the Vanuatu Police presence and disaster management programs across the island nation.

Mr Martin Johnson, Barrett’s Business Development Director, advised: “We delivered our latest system around 20 years ago, but as with all technology, HF radio has come a long way in that time. The Barrett 4050 now offers operators higher quality audio that comes with Digital Voice (DV) and Automatic Link Establishment (ALE) options. ALE automates frequency selection when connecting multiple stations to ensure the best sound quality, and DV removes the “white noise” associated with older HF radios. All these features allow the operator to use the equipment with minimal training and allow him to focus on the job at hand.”

In a recent statement, the Australian Minister for Defence, Senator Hon Linda Reynolds CSC, said that “Australia is proud to partner with the Vanuatu Police Force to design and deliver a lasting solution that meets the needs of Vanuatu. The project provides an invaluable avenue for enhanced cooperation, training and interoperability between our nations – including during humanitarian and disaster relief operations.

The Barrett 4050 HF SDR is used by governments and disaster management organizations around the world to provide security, disaster response and health radio networks that do not require expensive infrastructure and are fully autonomous.
