VMware Launches Telco Cloud Platform RAN to Speed 5G Solutions
VMware announced the launch of VMware Telco Cloud Platform RAN, a platform that enables CSPs to virtualize a radio access network (RAN) operates and implements an open RAN architecture to facilitate advanced 5G solutions, the company said in a statement.
In September 2020, VMware launched its own 5G Telco Cloud Platform, a cloud-based, high-speed platform to help communications service providers (CSPs) deploy 5G networks and deploy 5G applications and solutions faster, the IT virtualization and management company said.
VMware Telco Cloud Platform RAN will accelerate Edge and 5G solutions
VMware Telco cloud platform allows CSPs to quickly deploy and efficiently perform virtualized network functions (VNF) and containerized network functions (CNF) in 5G networks. VMware Telco Cloud Platform RAN extends the core VMware Telco Cloud Platform to RAN to help CSPs virtualize RAN functions on a platform specifically optimized for RAN and with support for the Intel FlexRAN reference architecture, VMware said.
Many large technology providers are pursuing opportunities in the 5G space; in addition to VMware, Intel,, Samsung, Google and others, as well as carriers such as T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T, continue to introduce 5G technology and infrastructure enhancements and major technology competitions to innovate in addition to these achievements. Intel and VMware, for example, are collaborating on an integrated software platform for virtualized RANs. The Intel-VMware relationship is designed to accelerate the deployment of both existing LTE and future 5G networks, the two technology companies said.
The partnerships will accelerate 5G innovation
Communications service providers (CoSPs) are increasingly adopting a software-defined virtualized infrastructure to support future 5G networks, and the collaboration aims to simplify integration efforts, reduce costs and accelerate development cycles, VMware and Intel say.
Many CoSPs adopt open and disaggregated RAN architectures that can allow fine management of radio resources and dynamic slicing for services such as cloud gaming and robotic controls, according to both companies. Intel and VMware said they plan to continue working with telecommunications equipment vendors, OEMs and RAN software vendors to help CoSP build more easily on the vRAN platform to handle specific end-to-end calculations and cases. of use with 5G capability.
“A modern, open and disaggregated RAN offers the CSP the only best way to quickly generate revenue from 5G services,” said Sanjay Upal, senior vice president and general manager, service provider and manager, VMware. “The new 5G services rely on the CSP to host edge applications close to end customers. Virtualized and open RAN allows service providers to provide these new services to customers directly from RAN sites. With the Telco Cloud Platform RAN, we accelerate the disaggregation of our own RAN and enable service providers to upgrade their RAN so that they can earn revenue from the 5G services they provide on their network. “
