Telefónica announces the deployment of a Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway solution in Vivo as part of its latest nationwide IP network deployment, Open Networking

  • Telefónica works with ADVA to implement a disaggregated cellular gateway (DCSG) solution as part of Telefónica’s transformed IP network architecture FUSION

  • Designed within the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) DCSG project, the solution uses open, standards-based and disaggregated network components, which brings better flexibility and scalability and accelerates the pace of innovation

Madrid / Sao Paulo, Madrid Telefonica and ADVA announced today that Telefónica Vivo is implementing a disaggregated cellular gateway (DCSG) solution as part of its latest IP deployment across the country.

Working on white boxes designed according to the DCSG specification, the solution provides functionality of generalized disaggregated cell site functionality (DCSG) implemented by the ADVA Ensemble Activator (NOS) network operating system.

The deployment of this solution, which was chosen in competition with other solutions from the established ecosystem, strengthens Telefonica’s strategy for open and disaggregated networks and is a clear indicator of the maturity of DCSG solutions and its technical and economic feasibility.

DCSG will enable the leading mobile network operator in Brazil (MNO) to implement cost-effective large-scale 5G mobile services. This will give Telefónica Vivo complete freedom to build provider-neutral disaggregated 5G connectivity networks using best-in-class components.

Designed within the TIP DCSG project, the solution uses open, standard-based, disaggregated network components capable of mixing and blending in a variety of combinations that allow for full deployment and operational efficiency and a stronger and more diverse supply chain. In addition, as an integral part of the specification, DCSG includes software-defined network technologies (SDN) for network management automation, fully aligned with the MUST subgroup specification in TIP to allow smooth integration with the operator’s BSS / OSS cards. and increased network automation.

“The new DCSG solution will provide flexibility for software-based feature development, along with the performance and economy of bare metal switches,” said Attila Araujo Branco, Director of Technology and Planning, Telefónica Vivo. “This implementation gives us an open, agile and efficient mobile ecosystem, suitable for next generation services and ready for future growth. The disaggregated, vendor-neutral model will allow us to choose software and hardware without restrictions, as we strive to meet the requirements for capacity, latency and reliability of 5G and beyond. “

“We are working closely with our partners in the Telecommunications Infrastructure project to develop the DSSG solution, in a relationship based on open cooperation and mutual understanding. This collaboration is becoming a reality today in the awarding of the DCSG solution as part of our transformed FUSION IP network architecture, ”said Cayetano Carbayo, Director of Core, Transport and Networking Platforms, Telefónica. “We are now working side by side with ADVA to deliver the benefits of openness and disaggregation to our clients in Brazil. This new network brings better flexibility and scalability, while allowing us to freely choose components and accelerate the pace of innovation. “

“The first commercial deployment of our Ensemble Activator for national 5G connectivity is an important moment for interoperable, disaggregated and virtualized radio access networks. Using our Ensemble Activator, Telefónica Vivo leads the way to an industry fueled by open innovation and collaboration between different suppliers, ”commented Christoph Glingener, Chief Technical Officer, ADVA. “Our open carrier-class NOS is ideal for operating large geographically dispersed networks. It ensures the economic efficiency of raw metal keys and brings flexibility to the transport infrastructure. Moreover, its open control interfaces and telemetry streaming are a major step towards automated operations and possibly autonomous networking. “
