Samsung, Marvell develops new System-on-a-Chip for 5G networks
Seoul, March 27 (IANS) Samsung Electronics said it has developed a new System-on-a-Chip (SoC) that can improve the performance of 5G networks in collaboration with US chip designer Marvell Technology Ltd.
The South Korean technology giant said the new SoC will be used in the company’s network equipment, such as massive multi-inputs (MIMOs) and other radios, and plans to introduce the product in the second quarter of the year.
SoC refers to an integrated circuit that integrates entire or most electrical or computer systems, including the CPU, memory, and input / output ports, onto a single substrate.
Samsung, the world’s leading maker of memory chips and foundry company number 2, said the latest SoC could provide increased capacity and coverage for cellular radios, while reducing their consumption and size, Yonhap reported.
“The new SoC is equipped to support both 5G and 4G networks and can also save up to 70% on chipset power consumption compared to previous solutions,” Samsung said.
Samsung and Marvell work closely together to develop network solutions. Last year, the two countries announced they were joining forces to develop 5G products, including radio architectures.
Their latest collaboration came amid aggressive pressure from Samsung to expand its presence in the 5G network equipment market.
The company recently signed deals with Japan’s best mobile network operator NTT Docomo, as well as Canada’s SaskTel and New Zealand’s Spark to deliver 5G solutions.
Marvell is the seventh largest integrated circuit design company in the world in 2020 with revenues of $ 2.9 billion, according to market researcher TrendForce.
