Nokia announces next evolution of 5G microwave transport portfolio
In its second major product announcement in a matter of days, Nokia expanded its mobile transport portfolio with a range of internal and external solutions for communications service providers and businesses.
Wavence’s expanded portfolio is designed to provide a complete microwave solution for all applications, covering short, long distance, E-Band and software-defined networks (SDNs), providing cost-effective, ultra-wideband transceivers with high capacity to support 5G network operators.
The range is available in two compact Split Mount solutions for 5G backhaul, activated by indoor units MSS-E and MSS-HE. These are compact, cost-optimized devices that are claimed to be the smallest on the market, providing high scalability and high performance.
The devices can also handle a temperature range ranging from -40 to 65 degrees Celsius without fans. This is said to improve reliability and reduce the need for periodic maintenance.
At the same time, Nokia is introducing a complete external hub configuration. It includes a module called Network Interface Module (NIM), which will see use in new deployments or upgrades to an installed UBT database. The solution can be integrated into a standard ultra-wideband transceiver (UBT) to enhance its external capabilities by offering multiple directions and interfaces, as well as media aggregation.
One NIM connects to all UBT types, in particular UBT-m (80GHz), UBT-T (dual) and UBT-S (single). Security protection is provided by encrypting 5G microwave radios, as well as readiness for certification and encryption of Federal standards for information processing.
The Wavence’s portfolio supports microwave in traditional bands (6-42 GHz) and E-Band (80 GHz), using the innovations of Nokia Bell Labs. Nokia said it provides maximum efficiency thanks to the full aggregation of carriers, including in all cases the use of 5G backhaul in different bands.
The introduction of Wavence technology comes just as Nokia announced that it is upgrading its AirFrame data center solutions with scalable third-generation Intel Xeon processors to increase computing capacity and achieve faster data lines and more memory capacity. The technology is designed to work with virtualized and cloud-loaded software load in the 5G era.
The inclusion of scalable Intel Xeon processors will provide faster speeds, superior data throughput and lower power consumption in support of Nokia 5G AirScale Cloud RAN and 5G Cloud Core solutions.
As a result of the working partnership between Nokia and Intel, AirFrame products will be upgraded immediately after the availability of processors to meet the requirements required by 5G technologies. Using Intel’s third-generation scalable Intel Xeon processor, Nokia AirFrame can better power Nokia’s virtual RAN (vRAN) and 5G core solutions in the cloud.
“Transforming the network with technology innovation from the core to the edge gives the full potential of 5G,” said Christina Rodriguez, vice president and general manager of Intel’s wireless access department.
“Through our continued collaboration with Nokia, AirFrame will take advantage of the expanded capabilities offered by the latest generation of Intel Xeon Scalable processors and our platform components, including Ethernet adapters and accelerators, providing operators with high performance and scalable optimized solutions. their whole network loads from core to end, ”she said.
