KrakenRF KrakenSDR is a software-defined radio (SDR) with five coherently operated receiver channels that is essentially the equivalent of five low-cost USB RTL-SDR dongles based on the R820T2 chip with one board housed in a metal housing equipped with five dedicated antennas.

KrakenSDR operates in the 24 MHz to 1766 MHz tuning range and connects via USB to the host system, preferably the Raspberry Pi4 because the open-source Core DAQ and DSP software is designed for popular single-board computers. There is also Android for location finding which is free to use for non-commercial applications.

You will need a set of antennas, a USB Type-C cable, a Raspberry Pi 4 or other host for data acquisition and signal processing, and a 5V/2.4A+ power adapter to complete the setup. The processed data is then usually transmitted via Ethernet or WiFi to another computer or Android smartphone for visualization.

DAQ software is used to absorb RF data from all five antenna inputs, automatically calibrates and achieves phase coherence through switches and noise sources, and provides coherent samples for DSP code that supports direction finding and passive radar. Both can run on a Raspberry Pi 4 or PC, but passive radars are more computationally intensive and could benefit from running on more powerful machines.

The KrakenSDR software is also equipped with a web interface for setting up a directional search system, mainly adjusting frequency, gain, and other advanced settings related to DAQ codes. The interface also features a live spectrum display and a graph of the output of the directional search algorithm.

KrakenRF is also developing a radio directional finder Android application that can automatically determine the location of a transmitter by leveraging the sensors, data connectivity, GPS, and mapping features of modern smartphones.

KrakenRF says a typical directional finder system can be very expensive when using Rhode & Schwarz DDF007 / PR200 for example with a claimed price of around $150,000.
