Highest Performance Space Processor for Software Designed Radio (SDR) Applications
Highest performance space processor for software-designed radio (SDR) applications
Press release from: Xiphos Systems Corporation
Published: Wednesday, August 5, 2020
Xiphos Systems Corporation (“Xiphos”) announces the Q8J, its latest generation of space processor boards, specifically designed to support advanced software-defined radio (SDR) applications.
The Q8J expands the capabilities of the popular Xiphos Q8 processor by adding a set of multi-gigabit transceivers per second to support JESD204B interfaces, as well as access to DDR3 or DDR4 external memory. The Q8J can interact with the latest generation of broadband radio frequency transceivers, enabling state-of-the-art SDRs for satellite broadband, Internet of Things (IoT) and inter-satellite network communications, as well as RF-generation applications.
The Q8J is an extremely high-performance space processor board based on the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale + Multi-Processor System on a chip (MPSoC). It retains the field-proven radiation characteristics of Xiphos for reducing radiation effects and low form factor, low mass and energy consumption of its predecessors, but provides an unprecedented level of performance. This at even higher MIPS / watt compared to previous Xiphos products. The Q8J sets the new standard for space processors.
Francesco Ritchie, chief engineer at Xiphos, says that “The Q8J’s hybrid combination of Gigahertz’s multi-core processors, massive programmable logic resources and a wide range of high-speed and JESD204B-compatible interfaces delivers extremely high performance, low SWaP and a flexible SDR-enabled application platform. which were not previously possible on CubeSats, nanosats or smallsats. “
Xiphos is developing custom SDR boards that will be used in conjunction with the Q8J for multiple clients in a variety of communications applications. These designs can be adapted for a quick turnaround. The engineering models of the Q8J will be available in early Q4 2020.
