DRM concludes General Assembly, makes new announcements
The DRM Consortium held its second virtual General Assembly on April 15you featuring 70 members and guests from all continents (Indonesia, Pakistan, UK, Germany, Denmark, South Africa, Hungary, Australia, India, Canada, Brazil, China and the US).
The first session, open to members and invited guests, reviewed the excellent progress made over the past year in countries such as India, South Africa, Indonesia, Pakistan and, more recently, Brazil, Russia and Hungary.
The long-awaited session for receivers did not disappoint with new prototypes, updates and developments announced by receivers and chipset manufacturers (Gospell, RF2Digital, Inntot, Cambridge Consultants, NXP, Fraunhofer IIS and Starwaves). They all announced that the new (very cheap, low-energy) receivers and receiving solutions support all DRM tapes, analog and SDR solutions and even other standards. The German-Swiss Starwaves has introduced its Android mobile key, which has just launched.
Fraunhofer IIS also provided details of the project to test the DRM framework within the ATSC 3.0 TV platform, which will provide access to multifunctional DRM content on radio, television, as well as mobile phones and cars.
The presentation in India focuses on almost 3 million DRM receivers in Indian cars. The recent successful DRM for FM test in India also included DRM AM and DRM FM headunits, integrated and working perfectly in some of the car models used during the test. Upgrading existing digital AM devices to FM was possible and easy without changing the hardware. As explained during the various GA sessions, most receivers, regardless of which platform (car, mobile, standalone) support the full DRM standard (AM and FM) and all DRM features giving additional benefits such as EWF (Emergency Warning Function) , distance learning, additional content in different languages.
In the busiest year of the Consortium’s activity so far, the participants also learned about full projects taking place in Indonesia and Pakistan, the successful DRM (FM) test in Russia and the DRM (SW) DRM test in Brazil.
The recent DRM test for FM in India had its own session and the interest was so great that the Consortium announced a full “DRM for a trial period in India – innovation and successWebinar for May 6you.
Aspects of the current radio market, energy savings provided by DRM, the educational project, liaison with other international organizations and improved communications were provided by representatives of Encompass Media Services, BBC, Fraunhofer IIS, RFmondial, Nautel, NXP, Ampegon, Dolby, Silabs, Radio Pulpit , Gospell, Kintronic Labs have a chance to update and discuss the issues that the Consortium will include in its future strategy.
According to the chairman of the DRM Alexandra Obrezha: “The DRM General Assembly was a great occasion to celebrate the great successes of the last year in the global crisis. Great receiver developments and DRM demonstrations and worldwide distribution plans set the program for next year. The commitment, energy and support of DRM members is our greatest asset and a guarantee that DRM will make it possible for everyone, no matter where they are and whether they are connected to modern technology or not, to be safe, informed and educated. “
