Dish selects Dell for 5G network infrastructure

Dell Technologies and Dish have entered into a strategic infrastructure agreement to support the US-based 5G network based on Open RAN.

As part of this partnership, Dell Technologies will provide Dish with a network and finite computing infrastructure.

“In collaboration with Dell Technologies, we will have the hardware and software infrastructure needed to harness the power and potential of 5G. Dell’s open ecosystem approach will help us scale our RAN network with flexibility, speed and consistency, creating new business opportunities for both corporate and consumer customers, completing our cloud strategy, ”said Mark Rouen, Dish’s Chief Network Officer.

Using Dell Technologies’ security software and global supply chain, Dish will deploy Dell’s open hardware and software infrastructure for its 5G network.

Through the agreement, Dell and Dish said they were creating private 5G wireless networking solutions, software-defined broadband networks and cloud platforms with multi-access.

The companies will also jointly develop technology for Open RAN, SmartNICs, emerging micro-edge coloring, operational automation and other areas of R&D. The joint teams will create solutions for multiple access to final calculations (MEC) for business and small business opportunities, the companies said.

As part of the deal, Dish will deploy Dell EMC PowerEdge servers at cell tower sites and centralized RANs and will use robust Dell EMC PowerEdge XR11 servers to support its private cloud and remote applications.

The two companies also set up state-of-the-art technology collaboration teams to identify and develop future technologies and investment opportunities.

Dish Network recently said it would count on of Amazon Web Services (AWS) as the basis for the cloud-based 5G network. Dish plans to deploy its cloud-based 5G Open Radio Access Network, launching in Las Vegas later this year, and says it will “connect all of its network management hardware and resources” through AWS. Dish says it works exclusively with vendors that offer cloud technologies and integrates them into AWS systems.

Last month, Dish selected Oracle to activate a service-based architecture (SBA) for its 5G core. SBA, part of the 3GPP 5G standard, allows fast integration of network services into new applications by Dish or Dish customers through automated, intelligent configuration between network functions.

Dish had also signed a number of infrastructure access agreements, including one with American Tower for access to up to 20,000 sites and strengthens its customer base with the acquisition of subscribers to the first Wi-Fi MVNO operator Republic Wireless.

Through the deal with American Tower, Dish will provide access to the company’s portfolio of communication sites in the United States, as it has its new 5G network across the country.

The company also recently secured new tower agreements with Harmoni Towers, Mobilite, Parallel Infrastructure, Phoenix Tower International (PTI), Tillman Infrastructure, Tower Ventures and Vogue Towers.

Earlier, Dish announced its intention to provide stand-alone 5G broadband coverage to 70% of Americans by June 2023.
