College of Engineering News: UMassD students awarded in Beyond 5G Challenge | College of Engineering

College students in engineering win the Best Team Award in the annual Beyond 5G Challenge of the Wright Brothers Institute and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

A student team led by Dr. Ruolin Zhou in the electrical engineering department at UMass Dartmouth College of Engineering recently competed in the Beyond 5G challenge. In collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the Wright Brothers Institute (WBI) hosts an annual competition to research, research, and innovate software-defined radio (SDR) and software-defined networks (SDN) applications.

This competition, known as the Beyond 5G Challenge, has been extended to universities across the country. Teams from prominent universities prepare a proposal for research and work for half a year in close communication with researchers from both AFRL and WBI. In May, each team presents its research, and the awards are given to the best teams.

The College of Engineering team competes with other top universities such as Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University. The proposed study was to use step-by-step training to classify real-time radio interference and to adapt autonomously when changing jamming technologies. Gradual learning is a new technique in machine learning that allows for continuous learning, which means that when a new jamming technique is encountered, the radio learns and remembers it.

The team consisted of the following:

• Todd Morehouse, 3rd year Ph.D. Student
• Charles Montes, 2nd year Ph.D. Student
• Michael Bisbano, senior in electrical engineering and computer engineering
• Jin Feng Lin, senior in electrical engineering and computer engineering

During the competition, the team showed their design in a demonstration of their research to adapt to a dynamic and challenging environment. The team received the award for best team in the limited category. In addition, a student member, Todd Morehouse, won the Travel Grant to fund trips to publish future research. Watch the video.
